PCB Prepares for Big Restructuring in Upcoming Meeting

Pakistan cricket is once again at a crossroads. Following a demoralizing Test series defeat to Bangladesh, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is preparing to make sweeping changes to its national team setup. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to hold a crucial meeting at Gaddafi Stadium on Friday, where he will receive a full briefing from team management before making decisions that could reshape Pakistan cricket for months to come.

The Friday Meeting That Could Change Everything

The meeting at Gaddafi Stadium is shaping up to be a defining moment for Pakistan cricket. Captain Shan Masood, the coaching staff, and high-performance director Aaqib Javed are all expected to appear before Mohsin Naqvi to present their account of Pakistan’s Test series loss. The outcome of this briefing will likely determine who leads the team going forward and in what capacity.

Sources close to the board suggest that Shan Masood’s time as Test captain may be coming to an end. Pakistan have played 16 Tests under his leadership, losing 12 of them a record that has proven impossible to defend. When Shan was appointed in 2023 by then-PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf, there was genuine optimism around his appointment. That optimism has all but evaporated. The PCB briefly attempted to give Shan an expanded role as director of international cricket, only to reverse the decision within days when it became clear the administrative burden clashed with his playing commitments.

Salman Agha Tipped as New Test Captain

The name circulating most prominently as Shan’s potential replacement is Salman Ali Agha, the current T20 International skipper. Salman has led Pakistan in 46 matches, winning 27 and losing 17, which on paper appears a reasonable record. However, concerns remain about his individual performances as a player. Critics argue that adding the weight of Test captaincy to his existing responsibilities could stretch him further, at a time when his all-round contributions with bat and ball have already fallen short of expectations.

Still, with few obvious alternatives available and the board under pressure to act, Salman appears to be the front-runner for the role.

Mohammad Hafeez Eyes a Return to Pakistani Cricket

Another significant development emerging ahead of the Mohsin Naqvi meeting is the potential return of former captain Mohammad Hafeez to Pakistan’s cricket structure. Hafeez is reportedly being considered for the role of director of international cricket, a post that has remained vacant since Usman Wahla’s removal several months ago. Notably, the PCB has not yet advertised the vacancy publicly on its official website, suggesting internal processes are already in motion.

The appointment of a trusted, experienced figure like Hafeez could bring some much-needed stability to a board that has struggled to maintain consistent leadership at the administrative level. The director of domestic cricket position has similarly been left unfilled since Abdullah Khurram Niazi was transferred to the Capital Development Authority, with two senior general managers currently managing affairs in an interim capacity. There are unconfirmed reports that Abdullah continues to advise the PCB chairman as a consultant, though the board has not officially confirmed this.

Aaqib Javed’s Role Under the Microscope

Beyond the captaincy question, the role of Aaqib Javed is also expected to come under scrutiny at the Mohsin Naqvi meeting. Over the past two years, Aaqib has worn many hats simultaneously serving as selector, high-performance director, occasional head coach, and NCA director. Despite the wide-ranging responsibilities placed on his shoulders, results have not followed.

Pakistan’s on-field failures in recent years paint a troubling picture. The team failed to make a meaningful impact in the ICC Champions Trophy hosted on home soil in 2025. They then endured a poor campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. These disappointments follow a similarly forgettable 2024 T20 World Cup, during which former fast bowler Wahab Riaz was overseeing cricket operations.

A Board Still Searching for the Right Formula

Since taking charge as PCB chairman on February 6, 2024, Mohsin Naqvi has made numerous changes shuffling captains, overhauling selection committees, and bringing in fresh coaching personnel. Yet consistent results on the field have remained elusive. The upcoming decisions following the Friday meeting will be among the most consequential of his tenure.

Pakistan cricket fans will be watching closely. Whether the changes Mohsin Naqvi announces deliver the results the board is desperately seeking remains to be seen but one thing is clear: the status quo is no longer an option.
